This is the website of the independent radio spectrum management review. We aim to use this site during the course of the review to inform those interested in the management of radio spectrum of the review's progress. Furthermore, this is an independent review and its recommendations and conclusions will be presented to the Secretary of State and to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Any documents published during the course of the Review are intended to assist this process, but any views expressed are those of Professor Cave and his team. At this stage, no views should be regarded as accepted by Ministers or as policy under which Radiocommunications Agency will operate.
The radio spectrum is an essential raw material for many of the UK's most promising industries of the future. But the amount of spectrum available is finite - and ensuring that it is used efficiently is essential if the growth of these industries is not to be impeded. The next decade will see significant growth and innovation in wireless communications. The UK has been successful in making spectrum available for new services but it is essential that the framework for spectrum management keeps up with the pace of change if the UK is to remain at the forefront of the information revolution. To help it move forward in this area, the Government has commissioned an independent review of spectrum management, to report to the Chancellor and to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry by the end of 2001. This review is led by Professor Martin Cave, Vice Principal of Brunel University.
