Scanning Telemetry: Advice to Manufacturers, Notified Bodies and Operators on the Interpretation of Voluntary National Specification 2111 |
![]()
Purpose of this information sheet
This information sheet provides supplementary information for applicants when defining their scanning telemetry systems in the RA37 licence application form. Other useful reference documents produced by RA for this service are:
UK Radio Interface Requirement 2037;
UK Voluntary National Specification 2111;
RA375 Frequency Assignment Criteria.
It is a condition of a scanning telemetry licence that the radio equipment to be used shall comply with the current UK RA Radio Interface Requirement 2037. This document addresses the permitted equipment, antenna class and options permitted in the UK for this service. It is also a high level description of how spectrum in the U.K. is used for scanning telemetry systems. RA375 provides the methodology used for the basis of planning the networks and determining the frequency assignment(s).
In order to declare conformance with the R&TTE Directive the equipment must satisfy the "essential parameters" laid out in the R&TTE Directive.
The R&TTE Directive is implemented in the UK Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Regulations 2000, Statutory Instrument (SI) 730. UK Radio Interface Requirement 2037 details the requirements for the licensing of scanning telemetry systems in the specified frequency band in accordance with Articles 4.1 and 7.2 of the Directive. Nothing in any of these stated documents shall preclude the need for equipment and antennas to comply with the requirements of this R&TTE Directive. ETSI candidate harmonised standards EN 300 113-2 and EN 300 086-2 cover equipment for similar systems but cannot be directly used for scanning telemetry systems. VNS 2111 has therefore been produced in the absence of any relevant ETSI Harmonised standard for the service. However, RA will permit certain concessions by substituting certain VNS2111 parameters and values (with their equivalents) from either EN 300 113-2 or EN 300 086-2. The three permitted equipment licensable combinations, "A", "B" and "C" are shown in the following matrices. Comments or enquiries regarding this information sheet should be addressed to the contact shown overleaf.
